Officials warned that these brightly coloured papads, commonly sold in markets, tourist spots, fairs, and exhibition grounds, are often marketed to attract children and may pose serious health hazards. According to the department, frequent consumption of such products may lead to digestive disorders, kidney damage, allergic reactions, attention-related disorders, and an increased risk of cancer over time, particularly among children. The department has directed food safety officials to intensify inspections and initiate strict action against violators under the Food Safety and Standards Act, while urging consumers to opt for traditionally prepared papads made from black gram, rice, and other natural ingredients instead of products containing artificial colours.
