FSSAI Mandates Use of Food-Grade, Corrosion-Resistant Cutting Equipment
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an advisory directing all Food Business Operators (FBOs) to use only food-grade, corrosion-resistant knives, blades, and cutting equipment in food handling and processing operations. The authority noted concerns over the use of rusted, chipped, painted, damaged, and non-food-grade equipment, which may lead to physical, chemical, or microbiological contamination of food. FBOs have been instructed to immediately remove unsuitable equipment from use and maintain all cutting tools in a hygienic condition. The advisory also emphasises regular cleaning, sanitisation, and sterilisation procedures wherever applicable. FSSAI has asked State Food Safety Commissioners, Licensing Authorities, and Food Safety Officers to ensure strict compliance through inspections. Non-compliance may attract action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and related regulations.
