Beyond Iodized Salt: Understanding the Critical ‘+F’ Logo for Fortified Foods
You see the FSSAI logo, but have you spotted the +F symbol? This tiny mark is a giant leap for nutrition, showing your food is fighting India’s hidden hunger.
India faces a severe problem known as Hidden Hunger—a lack of essential micronutrients (like Iron, Vitamin A, and Vitamin D) in the diets of a large portion of the population.2 This leads to serious health issues, including anemia and impaired development. The FSSAI’s solution is Food Fortification, and its symbol is the +F logo.
What is Food Fortification?
Fortification is the deliberate increase of the content of essential micronutrients in a food product. It is a powerful, cost-effective, and safe strategy to improve the nutritional quality of the food supply without requiring consumers to drastically change their eating habits.
The Fortification Symbol
The +F logo is a standardized, regulatory mark used by FSSAI’s ‘Eat Right India’ initiative. It consists of a square with the +F symbol and the text “Fortified with [Name of nutrient]” inside.
It appears on five main staple foods—often called the “Big 5.”
| Staple Food | Micronutrients Added | Why it Matters |
| Salt | Iodine, Iron | To combat Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) and Anemia. |
| Milk | Vitamin A, Vitamin D | Essential for immunity, vision, and bone strength. |
| Edible Oil | Vitamin A, Vitamin D | Necessary for the absorption of other fat-soluble vitamins. |
| Wheat Flour (Atta) | Iron, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 | Crucial for preventing anemia and neural tube defects. |
| Rice | Iron, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12 | A key strategy to tackle anemia in large populations. |
How the FSSAI Regulates Fortification
For a Food Business Operator (FBO) to use the +F logo, they must adhere to the FSSAI’s specific standards for micronutrient levels.
- Mandatory Levels: The regulator defines the exact amount of vitamins and minerals that must be added to each staple food to be effective. For example, fortified milk must contain a minimum of $770 \mu g$ of Vitamin A per liter.
- Quality Control: FBOs must ensure the stability of the added nutrients throughout the product’s shelf life and maintain stringent quality assurance protocols.
Choosing a product with the +F logo is one of the simplest and most effective decisions you can make to ensure you and your family are getting the minimum required micronutrients, making it a critical tool in the fight against ‘Hidden Hunger’ in India.
