FSSAI Acts on Ammonia Gas Leak at Tamil Nadu Seafood Unit

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) initiated regulatory action following an ammonia gas leak at a seafood export facility in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu. The incident occurred on June 21, 2026, affecting nearly 270 metric tonnes of processed and unprocessed seafood. A Central Food Safety Officer was immediately deployed to inspect the facility and collect surveillance samples. Around 13 metric tonnes of contaminated seafood were identified for disposal. Authorities also intercepted vehicles transporting seafood from the premises after the incident and secured the products in cold storage. Laboratory analysis of the collected samples is currently underway. FSSAI stated that further regulatory action will be taken based on the final test results.
