India Strengthens Global Food Standards Leadership at Codex Commission

India has achieved a major milestone at the 49th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission (CAC49) in Geneva, with the adoption of seven Codex standards and guidelines developed under its chairmanship and co-chairmanship. The Commission also approved India’s proposal to develop a new international Codex Standard for Cashew Kernels, further strengthening the country’s role in shaping global food regulations. The adopted standards include Dried Coriander Seeds, Fresh Curry Leaves, Vanilla, Large Cardamom, water reuse in food production, control of Campylobacter and Salmonella in chicken meat, and updated food labelling provisions. These science-based standards are expected to enhance food safety, consumer protection, regulatory harmonisation, and international trade, while reinforcing India’s growing leadership in global food standard-setting.
