Maharashtra Bans Junk Food Sales in School Premises

The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has directed schools across the state to prohibit the sale of chocolates, chips, carbonated soft drinks, and other unhealthy food products within school premises. The order, issued by FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, aims to encourage healthier dietary habits among children and create a nutritious food environment in educational institutions. Schools have been instructed to ensure that canteens and food vendors comply with the directive by promoting healthier food and beverage alternatives instead of high-fat, high-sugar, and high-salt products. The initiative aligns with ongoing efforts to improve child nutrition, reduce the consumption of junk food among students, and support healthier lifestyle choices from an early age. Authorities stated that compliance with the directive will be monitored, and schools are expected to strictly implement the measures to safeguard students’ health and well-being.
