FSSAI Updates Contaminant and Residue Limits for Safer Food Products 

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has notified amendments to its Contaminants, Toxins and Residues Regulations, aimed at strengthening food safety standards across the country. The revised rules extend lead and cadmium limits to pulse flours, introduce specific testing requirements for inorganic arsenic in fish oils, and clarify aflatoxin standards for oils and oilseeds. The notification also revises the permissible limit for saffrole in foods and beverages containing nutmeg or mace. Additionally, new residue limits have been set for the veterinary drugs trimethoprim and oxolinic acid in seafood products. The amendments are intended to improve consumer protection and align food safety requirements with current scientific standards. The new regulations will come into effect from December 1, 2026.
