FSSAI Issues Notices to 6 Energy Drink Brands Over Misleading Claims
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued notices to six beverage brands—Red Bull, PepsiCo’s Adrenaline Rush, Campa Energy Drink Gold Boost, Sting, Hell Energy, and Monster Energy—over alleged misbranding and misleading promotional claims. According to FSSAI, the products were marketed as “energy drinks” despite there being no notified standard or category for such products under its regulations. The regulator also objected to seven claims used in marketing, including “vitalises body and mind”, “enhancing focus”, “boost energy levels”, “aid in general weakness”, and other similar functional or therapeutic claims, stating that such claims are not permitted for food products under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The brands have been directed to explain their labelling and promotional practices in accordance with the applicable food safety regulations.
